"Anthony Joshua returns to Nigeria as boxing champion, nine years after the country’s boxing officials rejected him.His visit to Nigeria is a show of appreciation for the country's support.
"Nigerian-born world heavyweight boxing champion,Anthony Joshua is set to return to his ancestral home,Sagamu,Ogun state Nigeria in December 2017.Joshua's return to Nigeria would be the first in nine years after he made attempt at representing the country at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. He was, however, rejected by the county’s national boxing officials.Jeremiah Okorodudu,a former boxing champion, told the UK Sun about the incident.
“Joshua was in Nigeria once to connect with his roots and I think that was in 2007. He wanted a chance to compete for trials ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics qualifiers, but he was denied and not given a chance," Okorodudu said.
“Disappointed, he went back to England to represent Great Britain. He went on to win a gold that could have been a first for Nigeria at the Olympics.”
Leaving behind his experience with the country’s officials,Joshua declared after his win against Carlos Takam that he would be coming to Nigeria in the last month of the year.
His visit to Nigeria is seen as a show of appreciation to the country and his ancestral town. The people of Sagamu were seen praying and conducted some rituals to ensure Anthony Joshua wins against his Cameroonian opponent.
"We are all happy with our son's victory over Takam because a lot had been said about this fight. We are glad that it ended in victory for Oluwafemi," said one of Joshua’s Uncle after the fight.
"After his victory against Klitschko, Anthony actually told us that he would visit Nigeria to see his people. But he has been very busy preparing for the defence of his title. Now that he has successfully done that,Anthony will come to Nigeria before the end of December. We are in touch with him and his coming will be a great carnival for the entire people of Sagamu.I want our government to name a street and a stadium after him,"said Mr David Oyedola Joshua.
