I had watched my father use arts to save my village.-26 year old artist from ghana.

I am Edna Aninga,a 26year old Journalist,Artist and Enterpreneur. Growing up in the 90s,I had watched my father use arts to save my village.Yes not all heroes wear capes but he was our hero.Through arts,my father educated our community on pressing issues like hygiene, good health, the six killer diseases, birth control and so on.

There was a time of guinea worm invasion and my father’s books and illustrations educated the people on how to treat their water. Then came diarrhea and malaria which claimed lives but for his timely intervention of illustrating through arts, the use of malaria nets and depicting the essence of cleanlineess through images of people sweeping, covering their meals and washing of hands after visiting the loo,my community made up of mostly less educated people, would have had a different story to tell.

"My family survived on his arts work too. Most of his income came from arts which he used in feeding the needy and educating the less privileged. My father's love for arts and his generosity inspired my love for arts.Although I did not study it in school,my beginners arts work is breathtaking.

"Today, arts forms a major part of the imported goods and products of my country,Ghana.Meanwhile, men and women from my part of the country, Northern Ghana, are rich in art work ranging from pottery, basket weaving, leather products, the unique Batakari cloth amongst others with very little market value.

"In winning the 20,000ghc,I intend to boost the arts industry of Ghana by creating an online platform where their items will be sold at home in Ghana and abroad. This is to increase their income and leverage the market for them to better care for themselves and family.I wish to give them value for their great work which they earn very little for.

"I do not only wish to help them make enough money, but with my background in Journalism and my basics of arts,I want to curb societal problems such as teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortions unemployment and child labour which are predominant in northern Ghana through arts.In order to be best at it,I will equip myself first hand with increase knowledge then impact. The practical picture is to create a shed that will house the best artisans in the northern region and have younger interested youths including myself study under their experience. The long term effect is to give jobs to the youths and market our works and culture to the rest of the world.Thank you.
